Hundreds of citizens died and thousands more were infected following a cholera epidemic broke out in Zambia.

Relatives of citizens being treated for the disease gathered outside a stadium in the capital, Lucas, awaiting any information regarding whether their family members are alive or not.

Nabel Nyirunga told the British Sky News network, speaking regarding his grandmother: “For us, we were just waiting for her to leave the hospital. But unfortunately, we were told that she had passed away.”

The country’s Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo, visited the center and expressed her sympathy for those affected and advised that relatives should not attend the funerals of those who died due to cholera.

Sky News reported 351 deaths and nearly 9,000 infections.

The disease is transmitted by eating contaminated food or water.

The situation suggests that climate change has been the cause of heavy rainfall, which has contaminated the drinking water of those living in crowded and poorer areas.
