The Ixelloise also tells us regarding her desire to continue her commitment and the role of her dad in this decision. But she is aware, at the same time, that there is more violence than before in this world: “Social networks are unspeakably violent. »
The federal state and the Brussels and Flemish regions have been condemned in the climate affair. A comment ?
I remind you that the Vivaldi agreement includes the target of -55%. I will analyze the verdict to strengthen federal measures. This judgment will serve as leverage for me.

Does it still make sense to go to the COP?
We cannot let the negotiations take place without us. When I hear Zuhal Demir say that she’s not going because it’s not going to achieve anything… we might be surprised. It cannot continue to complain regarding Europe’s objectives and, at the same time, not agree to be at the table when it is decided to defend its interests. There is a contradiction.
What are you hoping to come back with?
Belgium will not speak in its name, it is Europe’s position that counts. It is undoubtedly the most important COP since that of Paris. States will find themselves faced with their commitment and their failure. We need to set more concrete objectives for future progress.
What do you think of the COP presidency?
The president of the COP is both CEO of an oil company and CEO of the largest renewable energy company. He eats from all the racks as long as it pays. It is therefore necessary to influence it… otherwise the fossil lobbyists will influence it.
A word on Sunday’s climate march? Where are the young people?
I won’t be there, since I’m a minister in charge. I realize we might do better. This mobilization will allow us to be even more ambitious. The youth mobilizations in 2019 were a lever for change in the parties.
What are the extreme parties doing in this debate?
Those most reluctant to show solidarity, to welcome asylum seekers, and those most reluctant to address climate issues are the reactionaries, the conservatives. It is worrying, the position of the extreme parties on this matter.
What do you think of Madame Tellier’s management of the PFAS and contaminated water issue?
I am taking the issue of PFAS to the European level. Minister Tellier regretted and recognized the problem. She apologized. I regret that some are using this file to hide their real position. These are the same people who ask me to remove the terms of the precautionary principle from my texts…
What do you think of the attacks on the Prime Minister following his comments on Israel?
The Israeli government criticized him. I note that every position that does not support the statements of the Israeli government is condemned. De Croo just asked for respect for humanitarian law and the protection of civilians. If today we cannot say that without being accused of anti-Semitism, there is a problem. It is even counterproductive in the fight once morest anti-Semitism. He also called for the release of the hostages.

Elections: “My decision was made following the loss of my dad”
For a moment, we might have thought that you were going to stop politics, like others?
I want to be there. This may not have been the case a few months ago, but it is my choice today. I understand and respect those who want to stop. For my part, I think that today is the time to go as an act of resistance. We need other voices than the reactionary right.
What made you change your mind?
My decision was made following the loss of my dad in July. I was questioning at that time and I rediscovered what founded my commitment. We found in his documents, in an envelope, the first interview that I had done in 2009 to announce my candidacy. It upset me that he bought the newspaper back then and kept this article all these years. It reminded me of the roots of my commitment. I am an ecologist. I am not an environmentalist. The issue of social justice, dignity… I know that my dad made me a party president and then a minister. All this has come back to me and I want to fight once morest inequalities.

“The more we are autonomous, the more we will be free of expression”
In the environmental file, will the Belgian European presidency be important?
“The Belgian European presidency must allow us to think regarding the objectives following 2040. What must percolate even more is that the climate crisis is an opportunity. We are aware that the climate crisis is violent… but we have seen it, for example with the nitrogen crisis in Flanders and the Netherlands, successive governments have not taken decisions since the 1990s. Today Today, the population and farmers are getting angry. If we don’t anticipate, we reach out to extremes and disasters. »
Are you worried regarding wars?
“Our dependence on oil countries means that our hands are tied in energy matters. The energy transition can allow us to untie ourselves and have greater freedom of speech on human rights… The more autonomous we are, the more free we will be of expression. Everything is connected. »
What have you achieved in four years?
“Tuesday, I presented my general policy note in assessment and perspective mode: at the Federal Government, the environment and climate are at the international level. I am laying the foundations for transversal climate governance at the national level. I don’t have the direct levers, but I am the architect and conductor at the federal level. I am arriving at the end of the legislature with a desire to evaluate public policies, which is not in the culture of our country, and not necessarily in a control approach but rather in a monitoring approach. I put in place a roadmap with objectives assigned to each of my colleagues. Regular assessment. I wanted to test the system before anchoring it in law. »
Can you improve the consumption of public buildings?
“I want transparency. For example, as for public buildings, there is a desire for sustainability. We must set an example of energy efficiency with the Buildings Authority. This is a good example. The response to the climate crisis will involve investments. »
We can’t plead for savings and transition?
“As part of the budgetary exercises, I am calling for massive investments, because all we invest today are savings for the future. Anything we don’t invest will lead to debt. This is a bad calculation. Saving money today will not save our future budgets. »
The Belgian world savings champion, what do you tell him?
“He must participate and invest in his energy saving. But I remind you that changes in individual behavior will not make climate policy. I am setting a framework for structural changes. For example, we cannot ask citizens to abandon their cars if we do not invest in trains, buses… and mobility in general. »
What to say to the citizen?
“I don’t want to burden citizens with their behavior if I don’t provide a solution. The previous MR-NVA government, under the pretext of environmental policy, had decided to increase excise duties on diesel, and I condemned the measure because at the same time, this government was making savings on SNCB. It does not go well. »
“The just transition is essential”
What to do for the citizen?
“I want a just transition climate policy. We know that it is those who are least responsible who suffer the most violent effects. The climate crisis is unfair. Elite behaviors consume more energy. The climate transition must be a lever once morest inequalities. For two years, I have put in place a just transition system. This two-year debate ended last weekend. A magnificent human experience with Flemish people, people from Brussels and Walloons. All of these people had a good understanding of the issues. It was a nice surprise. I will soon submit a report on the matter. All parties will be able to have access to it for the next elections and they will not be able to say that they did not know. If either party takes some of these steps once more, it will already be a victory. »
What are all these participants saying?
“Everyone tells us that we must act, but that we must not make the less fortunate pay. They emphasize training and education. Our universities must invest in sustainability across the board, this must become the heart of the matter and no longer just an optional course… to obtain results. »
So we need to invest?
“The climate transition will cost money, but we know that the cost of inaction will be higher, at the level of citizens and States (costs of air quality, etc.). Investing is the best way to keep our budgets balanced. The insurance companies themselves (see Sunday 7 of last week with Philippe Lallemand, CEO of Ethias) say that costs might increase. The challenge is not to save the planet but the conditions of viability on Earth. Indeed, the planet will survive us. I am convinced that the climate crisis is the social issue of this century. It is grafted onto existing inequalities and accentuates them. »
Something else entirely, with these multiple crises, a word on the risk of a decline in women’s rights?
“We must remain vigilant in Europe. We know that it is in times of crisis that the most conservative behaviors return and women return home. I am worried regarding the situation in Argentina. In Belgium, we must remain vigilant. Sometimes it’s tense, even at the government table. We must remember that rather than teaching your daughters to defend themselves, you must educate your boys. It’s never won. We see the difficulty of recruiting candidates when we put together lists, particularly because there is violence in politics… The violence is only increasing and we have lost the quality of democratic debate. »
Some have started to leave X (Twitter)?
“As president, I left him. I came back to it, but I manage it differently, with a real strategy. Today, there is an additional challenge with Elon Musk at the helm. Social networks are incredibly violent. »
