Zakharova comments on Washington’s withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty

Russia – The US “deep state” does not regret withdrawing from the INF Treaty at all, because it does not like to be on an equal footing with other countries, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Sputnik Radio.

Zakharova noted that American political circles are heterogeneous: there is a community of experts, social activists, official authorities, and the “deep state.”

“Perhaps, in some circles that calculated the consequences of the US’s destruction of international legal foundations, including in the field of security and strategic stability, there was some remorse. More broadly and more broadly, there are those who seized the reins of government in the country, the so-called deep state… In this group there is no remorse because this is exactly what they wanted,” she said.

Zakharova stressed that the “deep state” wants to free the United States from obligations that would give it equal rights with other countries of the world.

In early 2019, Washington announced a unilateral withdrawal from the INF Treaty, claiming that Russia had violated it, which Moscow categorically denied. In response, in early July 2019, the Russian president signed a law suspending the treaty.

In August of the same year, the agreement was terminated. Russia has repeatedly stated that it fully complies with the terms of the INF Treaty. Moscow has indicated that Russia has very serious questions about the Americans’ implementation of the treaty themselves.

At the end of 2023, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the United States had terminated the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, due to the American side’s need for missiles prohibited by this document for use, including against China.
