The fragment of a German singspiel created in Mozart’s last year in Salzburg, 1779/80 – he calls it an “operetta” – still poses countless mysteries today. The production of “Zaide” at the Donaufestwochen in Strudengau, which premiered on Saturday at Greinburg Castle, tries to solve this in an unconventional way, but gets lost in a slapstick comedy that this work was probably never intended to be.
