Yves Coppieters looks back on the coronavirus pandemic: “In the unknown, we had to protect the population”

This Thursday, March 2, Maxime Binet, his guests and his columnists returned to several current topics: the euthanasia of Geneviève Lhermitte, the forgotten coronavirus and wokism.

To discuss the first subject, Nathalie Gallant, criminal lawyer and Jacqueline Herremans, lawyer and member of the Euthanasia Commission. Then the coronavirus will be discussed by Yves Coppieters, professor of public health (ULB). And to finish on the subject of Wokism, Pascal Delwit, political scientist.

Regarding the euthanasia of Geneviève Lhermitte, the process before arriving at this decision is quite long. “Two psychiatrists are called in to consult the patient. They ensure that all possible treatments have been carried out. After all this long process, we can finally decide to authorize euthanasia”explique Jacqueline Herremans.

Then the debate turned to the famous virus that appeared in 2020, the Covid. Present on the set of “We need to talk”, the expert Yves Coppieters took stock of the management of the pandemic. “I think most of the decisions have been justified by the unprecedented coronavirus crisis. In the unknown, it was necessary to protect the population. On the other hand, on the second part of the crisis, we maintained fairly strong measures.

To accompany this debate Michel Kacenelenbogen ranted regarding stopping culture. Without it the world cannot move forward. “Society will not recover if there is no Culture. Without it, no more democracy. Culture allows free will, to see the beautiful in this world and without it, we cannot imagine any future.”

In conclusion of the program, Pascal Dewit evoked wokism in Belgian politics, in particular for Bart de Wever. “It’s quite logical that Bart de Wever approaches this subject. He who has made identity his main battle horse. Moreover, he thinks regarding society in relation to its traditions, values of the past. That he is once morest the wokist movement is natural.”
