Top seed Iga Swiatek was surprisingly knocked out of Wimbledon in the third round by world number 35 Yulia Putintseva on Saturday (6/7).
Putintseva recovered from losing the first set to beat Swiatek 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
“It feels amazing,” said Putintseva, who will face Latvian 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the last 16 at Wimbledon.
“I felt great and it showed in this match. I kept trying to entertain the crowd with my punches,” he continued.
Swiatek has been the most dominant player on the WTA tour this year following success on both clay and hard courts but she has never won Wimbledon.
The five-time Grand Slam winner is known for her clinical play but in her match once morest Putintseva, Swiatek made 34 unforced errors.
Putintseva’s win also ended Swiatek’s 21-match winning streak.
Putintseva has reached the quarter-finals of the French Open and the US Open but has never progressed beyond the second round at Wimbledon. (bbc/Z-1)
