Daniel Yule, the last Swiss globe hopeful, was eliminated in the first run of the Méribel slalom on Sunday. Lucas Braathen, Henrik Kristoffersen and Atle Lie McGrath form the provisional podium.
The slalom globe will be contested until the last gate. This first round was dominated by the Norwegians. Lucas Braathen, Henrik Kristoffersen and Atle Lie McGrath were the fastest in the World Cup Finals slalom in Méribel. Clément Noël took 4th place, 45 hundredths from the leader. Loïc Meillard is not very far, since he is only 37 hundredths from the podium.
Already third on Saturday at the giant, the skier from Hérémence showed confidence. He will have to confirm this good approach during the second track. A round in which Luca Aerni (+1”75) will also participate, he who did not know how to find the right rhythm. Ramon Zenhäusern mightn’t do much better (+2”38). The Haut-Valaisan will never have regained the level which is his this season. Blame it on a shoulder injury that hampered him during each race.
If Daniel Yule was the last Swiss to be able to grab the title, he failed at the very start of the course. His elimination cut off all hope of a globe for the technician who had placed himself on the podium twice during the season.
Second in Wengen, third in Flachau, he took the start in Méribel with a tiny hope of being able to overtake Henrik Kristoffersen in the slalom classification. There were many conditions. If the Norwegian went out and Daniel Yule finished on the podium, and if the other contenders for the globe (Braathen, Strasser, Feller) won no or few points, the globe was possible.
Round two is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Given the intensity offered throughout the season, the show is likely to be exciting.
