YouTubers Show That Swapping Mac Mini’s SSD Is Possible, But Challenging

2023-08-14 21:35:41

Luke Miani e @dosdude, two Mac-focused tech enthusiasts, managed to increase the storage space of a Mac mini (M1); the experience was shared in a video on YouTube. However, the process may not be straightforward for the general public.

Originally, Mac mini even had a design that allowed users to easily change some of its components, such as SSD or RAM. However, with the arrival of Apple Silicon, these parts are now permanently attached to the machine, making upgrades a challenge.

Dedicating time and expertise, the duo managed to do something that, until then, was considered almost impossible: replace the original 256GB storage for a much larger one, 2TB — the maximum supported by the computer. The procedure involved taking out the old storage, which is soldered, and installing new flash memory chips.

Despite having faced obstacles, such as the need to use specific techniques and specialized tools, the result was successful.

It is noteworthy that the cost of the materials they used was only US$100 — value much more into account than the US$800 charged by Apple to add the same storage space on the newest Mac mini. However, it is essential to consider the risks: changes like this could void the product warranty and, if something goes wrong, could result in irreparable damage.

In March 2022, Miani attempted to upgrade Mac Studio’s storage, but faced issues due to the specifics of modules and restrictions of tools used by the Genius Bar, which are intended for repairs and not for upgrades. Today, the only Apple computer with expandable storage is the Mac Pro (M2 Ultra).

So, if you’re thinking about expanding your Mac’s storage, know that if you don’t have the necessary skills to perform this type of procedure, it may be safer and more practical to consider external options, such as an additional storage drive or a External SSD.
