You may not know but Gears of War 3 was at some point in development for the PlayStation 3. Don’t think that Epic Games wanted to betray Microsoft and take their franchise elsewhere (the story is interesting, but not that funny), but the fact is that that version exists. In fact, now a popular youtuber showed it in action and now he even jokes that he is waiting for legal action from Sony.
This morning, Linus Tech Tips, one of the most popular tech channels on all of YouTube, uploaded a video that caught the attention of console gaming fans. The thing is, instead of focusing on new PC hardware or doing something crazy, the youtuber showed off 2 pieces of hardware that many of us never expected to see.
In case you missed it: Sony patent might revive PS3-era devices for PlayStation 5
In the first part of the video, Linus boasts that he got a PlayStation 3 development kit. Specifically, it is the DECR-1000A Referemce Tool model, one of the first kits for Sony’s third console, which is said to have reached cost up to $50,000 USD. A frighteningly high number that is only surpassed by the enormous size of the device, which is taller and wider than any Sony console.
In the video, Linus walks through this piece of hardware to show enthusiasts what was included in the dev kit for a console as complex as the PlayStation 3. Keep in mind that this is a piece of hardware that the public should never see.
This is why Linus jokes that Sony will send him a cease and desist letter to take down the video, but we imagine that’s unlikely to happen. Especially since Linus did not sign any contract with Sony. The one who might be in trouble is the developer who gave him the console, but we imagine that Sony has more interesting things to do than worry regarding dev kits that are 17 years old.

The video shows Gears of War 3 para PlayStation 3
One of the interesting points of the Linus Tech Tips video is that it shows that the PlayStation 3 development kit is still working. In fact, the piece of hardware can still connect to the PlayStation Network and even has things installed like development versions of Life is Strange y LittleBigPlanet.
However, the most striking thing regarding the video is that Linus shows the PlayStation 3 version of Gears of War 3. It’s a product that’s been publicized for a long time, but it’s still really exciting to see one of the biggest Xbox 360 exclusives running on Sony hardware.
Something that stands out is that the PS3 version of Gears of War 3 runs at less than 20 frames per second. However, it’s almost a miracle that this port works considering how different the PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware is.

It is worth mentioning that it was most likely the previous developer or someone from the Linus Tech Tips team who installed all of this in the development kit. After all, it would be very rare for the same kit to have products from different studios like Epic Games, Media Molecule and dontnod Entertainment.

Linus also has a prototype of the PlayStation Vita
That’s not all, as Linus also showed off a prototype of the PlayStation Vita which, surprisingly, connects to the PlayStation Vita development kit. In fact, everything seems to indicate that it is a very early version of the console.
We say the above since the prototype does not have a design close to that of the Vita. In fact, we’re not even sure we can call it a laptop since you have to plug a DualShock 3 into it to use it.

Sadly, Linus mightn’t show much regarding the PS Vita as it needs special firmware to make it work. That said, it’s very interesting to see how one of the first versions of what will possibly be Sony’s last handheld console turned out.
What did you think of Linus’s video? were you excited to see Gears of War 3 on PlayStation 3 or the PlayStation Vita prototype? Tell us in the comments.
