YouTuber manages to use HomePod with Wi-Fi failure thanks to “secret” port

One YouTuber repair specialist discovered that the debug port hidden in the base of the HomePod original can be used to connect the speaker to a Mac via the USB-C port and generate an AirPlay connection that allows you to play audio from your computer on the device.

The hack was done using a HomePod with a faulty Wi-Fi chip — meaning that Apple’s smart speaker was completely unusable for its original purpose. The feat, therefore, allowed the product to be given a sort of lifeline.

When you use a custom cable in conjunction with an adapter for the USB-C port, your Mac recognizes your device as a USB speaker and appears in the AirPlay device list — even if Wi-Fi is completely disabled.

This works exclusively on Macs, and you cannot use an iPhone or iPad Pro for the same purpose. For the YouTuberit may be that Apple used the method in internal testing to ensure that the HomePod’s sound hardware was working properly.

It is also possible to play audio from your Mac to two HomePods at the same time. Although the limitations of AirPlay prevent this directly, it was possible to do so thanks to the app Airfoilfrom famous audio software developer Rogue Amoeba.
