O YouTube announced today a new design for its TV app, aiming to bring a richer, more interactive viewing experience to the bigger screens in viewers’ homes.
According to executives, the platform is evolving beyond its traditional passive viewing format to introduce features that allow viewers to directly engage with the content they enjoy.
With more than 1 billion hours of content being consumed daily on televisions, the company recognized the need to adapt and improve its interface to meet changing viewing habits.
Therefore, the new design seeks to strike a balance between the simplicity of the experience and new elements, such as comments, video descriptions and the ability to purchase products featured in the videos, directly from the TV.
With the move, Google ended up developing a refined video player that reduces its size to accommodate these interactive features alongside the content, rather than simply obscuring them.
According to the company, the central element of the new design is to ensure that basic video functions are easy to use. This ensures that watching content remains the main draw of the YouTube TV experience.
The platform says it has tested different versions of its design with users, exploring varying levels of complexity, to find the right amount of interactive features, avoiding overwhelming viewers or making the interface too complicated to be used easily.
Test results showed that although users enjoy interacting more with content through features such as live chat and video descriptions, it is important that these additions do not interfere with viewing the main video.
According to the announcement, YouTube’s new design should arrive in the coming weeks for the TV app. Although the company did not mention the tvOS in the statement, it is likely that the Maçã system (and other set-top boxes) also receive these news soon.
