O YouTube announced that it will tackle cancer misinformation as part of its updated health policy. The platform will remove videos that promote false cures, unproven treatments or that contradict medical advice from recognized health authorities.
The company’s goal is to prevent users from being misled or harmed by misleading or dangerous content regarding cancer and other diseases. The measure is similar to what was implemented by big tech during the covid-19 pandemic, a period in which the site was bombarded with denialist and untrue content.
The platform had a policy of removing videos that spread false information regarding vaccines, covid-19, HIV and AIDS. Now the company has broadened the scope to include other serious illnesses such as cancer. The decision was made following consulting health experts and organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Cancer Society.
The new policy will affect both content creators and advertisers. You videos that violate the rules will be removed and channels that persist in the violation may be suspended or banned. Ads promoting cancer-related products or services must also follow platform guidelines and must not make false or misleading claims.
YouTube said the health policy update is part of its commitment to protecting users and promoting credible sources of information. The company said it will continue to work with experts and partners to improve the quality and accessibility of health content on the platform.
