YouTube Music is testing a new way to help you find something to listen to. It’s Samples, which takes up a new tab in the YouTube Music app. Here’s how it works.
Over the past few years, virtually every platform worth its salt has taken inspiration from TikTok’s signature scrolling vertical video thread to create their own version. YouTube notably launched Shorts, which have already exceeded 2 billion users, and Instagram had also added Reels to its application, these short full-screen videos that can be scrolled.
YouTube Music will also take inspiration from TikTok’s famous feature, as the app adds a vertical video stream called Samples, which YouTube describes as a way to sample and quickly find new music with just one tap. The samples are basically short videos that you might find on TikTok, except they’re exclusively made up of small excerpts from music videos.
YouTube Music integrates vertical videos into its app
Each clip in the feed offers a preview of the artist, music video, and mood of a song recommended to you. Like on TikTok and other short video streams, users can Swipe vertically in the new Samples feed to discover new songs and music videos.
The « continuous stream of short video segments » is powered by « the largest catalog of music videos in the world “, boasts proudly YouTube. The Samples stream promises “ Explore the depths and breadth of the YouTube Music library so there’s always something new to listen to ».
If you like a song, you can click the “Like” button on the side or on the thumbnail in the lower corner to view the album it is on. The stream also includes other options, including quickly adding the song to a playlist, making a short movie from the song, sharing the song with others, and more.
Meanwhile, Spotify recently did a major overhaul that uses this feature too, but on a whole new level. The app offers automatic preview cards for recommended content in its music, podcasts, and audiobooks feeds.
The Samples tab is rolling out to the YouTube Music app globally starting todayso if it is not yet available to you, you will still have to be patient since, as often, the deployment is gradual.
