With the latest update to the YouTube for iOS (for version 19.01.1), launched this week (10/1), the YouTube mini-app for iMessage has been discontinued. Although there is no indication in the release notes, when performing the update, the mini-app disappears from the messenger.
This mini-app was launched in 2017, a year following the creation of the iMessage App Store and apps within the messenger. With it, it was possible to search for and send YouTube videos in a conversation directly from an iMessage chat. There was also the possibility of playing videos using the YouTube player within the messaging app.
YouTube has not confirmed whether the removal was intentional, but it is very likely that it is, even though the update’s release notes only include bug fixes and performance improvements. It is not known what led the company to remove its iMessage miniapp.
Despite representing an interesting addition to iMessage, the messenger’s App Store is not exactly the most used feature of iOS/iPadOS. Several mini-apps have also been discontinued in recent years, so YouTube’s decision isn’t all that surprising considering the whole context.
