EraAccording to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the global unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24 is 13% in 2023, the lowest level in 15 years. The number of unemployed youth has fallen to 64.9 million, the lowest figure since 2000. Youth unemployment rates are already below pre-health crisis levels in most countries, with the exception of the Arab countries and East and Southeast Asia.
The report also pointed out that “the recovery of the labor market has benefited young men more than young women.” In the decade from 2009 to 2019, the unemployment rate of young men worldwide was 0.7 percentage points higher than that of young women on average. Since the outbreak of the epidemic, the unemployment rates of young men and young women have converged, with the former at 12.9% and the latter at 13%.
Increase in temporary workers
According to the International Labour Organization, in low-income countries, only one in five young people aged 25 to 29 can find “secure paid employment”, defined as wage-for-wage employment with a job contract lasting more than one year. As a result, by 2023, nearly three-quarters of young working adults in sub-Saharan Africa will be in precarious employment.
In high-income countries, while the proportion of young people in “secure paid employment” is significantly higher (76%), the incidence of temporary work has also increased. “The global trend towards job insecurity is causing increasing anxiety for young people who aspire to gain financial independence and take the next step in their adult lives,” the report said.
Finally, globally, the share of young people in study or training has increased significantly since the beginning of the century, from 38% in 2000 to 48% in 2023. “Value is slowly being realized,” the ILO noted. “As a result, young people in developing countries still find jobs mainly in low- and medium-skilled occupations. The pool of young job seekers with tertiary education is growing as the number of high-quality jobs is limited. »
