Young people from the Gbessia Cité de l’air neighborhood in the Commune of Matoto were in the street this Thursday, September 28, 2023. They are protesting against a decision by Mayor Mamadouba Tos Camara whom he accuses of having sold their land “illegally.” game to a company to build a refinery factory there.

Very angry demonstrators chanted slogans hostile to the mayor of the commune of Matoto. “We were told that it was Mamadouba Tos who took our land to give to a refinery plant that we don’t even know about. Mamadouba Tos is an obstacle for this commune,” denounced a demonstrator.

Young people from the Gbessia Cité de l’air neighborhood say they have taken steps with the authorities in their neighborhood, but without success. They accuse their neighborhood chief of complicity with the town hall. All the same, they say they are determined to go all the way to have their rights restored.

In the meantime, the young demonstrators are calling on the president of the transition, Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, to intervene. “We are asking the government to help us. We ask Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya to come and help us. We lack basic infrastructure in Gbessia. Every time we have a play space, they come and give it to factories. They transformed the commune of Matoto into an industrial zone,” regrets another demonstrator.

In the wake of this demonstration, the security services who intervened and used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. According to the latest news, we learn that cases of injuries and arrests have been recorded among the ranks of the demonstrators.
