Youth data: Triple vaping among teenagers since 2021

Youth data: Triple vaping among teenagers since 2021

It emerges from the surveys in The Ungdata report which NOVA presents at Arendalsuka on Monday.

The use of e-cigarettes (vaping) has only been surveyed in Ungdata in recent years. During this period, use has increased significantly.

The proportion who have tried vaping has increased from 16 to 30 per cent from 2021 to 2023. The proportion who vape daily has increased from 1 to 3 per cent. The proportion who vape occasionally has increased from 4 to 11 per cent.

The national report is based on local Ungdata surveys from 2023 and 2024 with responses from 150,000 young people in secondary school and upper secondary school in 210 municipalities. Among other things, questions have been asked about the use of e-cigarettes, snuff and smoke.

As expected

– The increase in vaping nationally is in line with the trend we saw The Oslo numbers we got last year. It also matches trends in other countries. It’s kind of expected and something we look at with concern, says divisional director Linda Granlund in the Norwegian Directorate of Health to NTB.

While vaping has become more widespread, the use of smoke and snuff is at the same level as ten years ago.

More girls than boys report regular use of vape, while use of snuff and smoke is more common among boys.

While vaping is more common in junior high school, the proportion who snort or smoke is highest in high school.

Snuff use in particular changes greatly during the teenage years. While 1–2 per cent of students in the 8th grade snuff daily or weekly, the figures at the end of upper secondary school are 22 per cent among boys and 15–16 per cent among girls.

Goals for a nicotine-free generation

Granlund emphasizes that the health authorities are taking several measures, including the anti-tobacco campaign “Generation FRI”, which has been running since May. The aim is to help prevent and reduce tobacco and nicotine use among young people, in line with the government’s tobacco strategy that those born in 2010 and later will become a nicotine-free generation.

The Directorate of Health says they are now looking at which additional measures can contribute to achieving this goal.
