A new Universal Accessibility feature announced by Apple on Tuesday will allow iPhone phones to mimic their owner’s voice following just 15 minutes of setup.
This new measure aims to allow people who are at risk of losing the use of their vocal cords in the near future to create a voice that sounds like their own in order to use Apple’s text-to-speech tool.
Written sentences can therefore be read by the device with the voice of its owner, especially during calls or conversations in person.
Setting up this tool requires reading 150 sentences to be recorded by the device, following which the phone will be able to imitate a voice.

“Accessibility is part of everything we do at Apple,” said the firm’s Director of Accessibility Policies and Initiatives, Sarah Herrlinger, in a statement. These features were created with feedback from community members with disabilities.
Although this technology has the potential to meet a real need, questions arise as to the potential use of this tool for the imitation of the voice of a third party in order to create videos or audio extracts of the “deepfake”.
Apple indicates in its press release that the tool uses “the technology of machine-learning present on the device to keep user information private and secure.
It should be available later this year.
