“Your home is before your profession.” The advice of the Cairo Doctors Syndicate ignites the social media

A sharp wave of criticism faced by the head of the Cairo Doctors Syndicate, Dr. Sherine Ghaleb, after her statements in which she called on new female doctors to focus on home matters and raising children before their work and profession.

Dr. Sherine Ghaleb, captain of Cairo Physicians and Professor of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, gave a speech at the graduation ceremony of the students of the Faculty of Medicine at Al-Azhar University, in which she advised the new female doctors to focus on the home and taking care of the husband and children first: “A word only to the beautiful female doctors who are graduating today: You are your home, then your home, your children, and then your profession.”

Requests for apologies

The speech aroused widespread criticism, and the tweeters and pioneers of social networking sites demanded the captain to apologize and retract her statements that establish the return of women to the home and not to enter the labor market.

Ghaleb responded to this by saying that “the party was a year ago, and I spoke spontaneously, frankly and without arrangement, and I felt like I was among my sisters,” noting that in the circulating video, she gave tips for dealing with patients and their colleagues.

The National Council for Women criticizes

For her part, Dr. Maya Morsi, head of the National Council for Women, responded to the statements, criticizing them and calling on the Syndicate of Physicians to support and support women’s work, instead of advising them to focus on the home and family care.

Morsi said in a post on her page on the social networking sites: I was hoping that the Cairo Doctors Syndicate would stand and say to the graduate girls, I faced many difficulties in order to succeed and achieve what you see today, and I will work and strive to provide you with services and family care in all workplaces so that you succeed in all places. And all specialties.

She added, “The captain should have said, “The difficulties and challenges I faced balancing between my work and my family, I will work to overcome them. The most important thing is that you help build a homeland that needs every minute of work, science and diligence.”
