The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has warned of major health problems that may result from taking vitamin D preparations without medical advice.

“High doses of vitamin D should be taken only under medical supervision, taking into account the status of vitamin D in the body of each individual,” the institute says in a recent statement.

The statement also stated: “If you want to take vitamin D without medical advice, you should resort to preparations whose daily dose reaches 20 micrograms (800 international units) only, as this dose cannot cause any complications that harm health.”

According to the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), taking high-dose vitamin D preparations daily and regularly without any medical justification may increase the risk of harm to health, according to the “Tiroler Tagzeitung” website.

Among the dangers that can result from this are kidney stones or kidney calcification, and cases of kidney failure have even been recorded as a result, according to the Austrian website.
