Focus on fairness and appropriate remuneration for professional footballers

Vienna (OTS) younion _ The Daseinsunion and the Austrian Football Bundesliga have agreed to begin discussions on changes to the collective agreement in November 2023. The aim is to adjust the minimum salaries for professional footballers in view of the increased cost of living and current economic developments.

The current collective agreement, negotiated by the younion sports union as the only legitimate social partner for professional footballers, sets a minimum salary of €1,600. This sum is particularly important for players in the second division and often represents the starting wage for young professionals. An automatic increase to €1,650 is planned for July 1, 2024.

Preliminary discussions with ÖFBL representatives have already taken place. The social partners have known and valued each other for many years and are confident that they can quickly find a good solution.

“Due to the massive price increases over the last 1.5 years, we saw a need for action here and sought talks with the Bundesliga on behalf of all Austrian footballers,” explains younion players’ union Thomas Pichlmann.

“The Bundesliga is well aware of the situation and we are convinced that we can work out a solution together, in the tradition of social partnership. We, as player representatives, are striving for an appropriate adjustment of the minimum wage,” continued the representative of the younion sports union.

The Austrian football Bundesliga is currently experiencing an upswing, with increasing viewer numbers and growing interest. “It is important for us that athletes in particular benefit from this positive development. We want to contribute to this with a fair and modern collective agreement.

“Regardless of the collective agreement negotiations, we are also concerned with improvements in terms of equipment costs, such as football boots. This aspect was brought up once more and once more in discussions with the players,” emphasizes younion trade unionist Thomas Pichlmann.
