Video: This is how Doyle Nielson (16) experienced the shark attack

16-year-old Doyle Nielson is swimming on his surfboard when a shark jumps out of the water and bites his arm. The teenager was just able to save himself on the shore. In the video he tells how he experienced the attack off New Smyrna Beach in Florida.

Hai had attacked the teenager from below

Photographer Sam Scribner happened to capture the attack on his smartphone. It shows how two sharks shoot out of the high waves while several surfers are in the water. 16-year-old Doyle is swimming towards the waves. Then it happens: A shark attacks the teenager from below and bites his arm.

With the last of his strength he just manages to get to the coast. “It felt like someone jumped on my surfboard,” he says in the video. “Then when someone yelled, ‘There’s a shark, go away,’ it was clear what it was.”

Photographer: “It’s crazy how fast it went”

Photographer Scribner also talks regarding his frightening shots. Doyle happened to be in the middle of the picture when the shark bit, he says. “It was over in seconds. It’s crazy how fast it went.”

On the “abc” station, shark researcher George Burgess warned of the dangers lurking off the Florida coast. Although shark bites are very rare, the danger is particularly high in this area. “We’re seeing typical shark behavior here. When surfers go into the ocean, they should assume there are sharks there,” says Burgess. (mor)
