Young Quebecers are increasingly represented in insolvency proceedings in Quebec. Our Bureau of Investigation and the show JE met several young people who went bankrupt before even turning 25.

TOTAL DEBT: $4737

NOM : Audrey Vallières
AGE : 22 ans
VILLE : Repentigny

BANKRUPTCY : mars 2023
CAUSE : insufficient income, return to studies

A problematic romantic relationship with an older man is said to have completely ruined Audrey Vallières, who found herself going bankrupt in her early twenties.

“Me, when I love, I would do anything for that person. […] He dragged me into his financial problems,” she rages.

Audrey was 18 when she left school. Despite a financial situation that was far from ideal, she co-signed a contract with her partner at the time to allow him to afford a vehicle, she says.

Her lover also allegedly asked her to move a few times, because he was changing jobs.

“Well, I had to follow him,” she explains.

At a certain point, even though she had a stable job in a warehouse, she says she realized that she didn’t see herself doing this for the rest of her life. So she resigned and signed up for welfare.

However, she would not have declared to social assistance the income she earned from odd jobs done here and there. And she got caught.

Debts

“I have a lot of debt to social assistance,” she laments.

Before regaining control, Audrey says she went through a very dark period.

“It really is unimaginable sources of stress! Not sleeping, I experienced it there before doing business with Raymond Chabot [un syndic]it’s disgusting,” she explains.

“You no longer have credit and you are no longer accepted anywhere. You would like a loan, it’s impossible,” she says, regarding the insolvency procedure in which she is engaged.

In order to get back on track, Audrey returned to live with her grandmother. Her bankruptcy costs her $100 per month, an improvement compared to the $133 per month that cost her a proposal she considered, but which ultimately did not come to fruition.

The dropout says she is taking steps to resume her studies. She wants to get involved in automobile mechanics soon.
