Young people satisfied with their training

According to the transition barometer, 86,000 young people aged 14 to 17 completed their compulsory education in the summer of 2023. Among them, 46% opted for initial vocational training, while 36% preferred general training. The remaining 18% chose an intermediate solution, with most of them intending to follow initial professional training followingwards.

Apprenticeship allocation rate

Most training companies maintained a constant number of apprenticeship places compared to 2022. The allocation rate of the apprenticeship places offered remained stable at 84%, similar to previous years.

Satisfaction of young people with training

In summer 2023, 82% of young people were able to start the training of their choice, showing their satisfaction at leaving compulsory school.

Recruitment difficulties in certain sectors

However, some recruitment difficulties were observed, particularly in the area of ​​economic and support services activities, where 40% of apprenticeship places on offer had not yet been filled as of August. Construction and accommodation/catering also struggled to fill some apprenticeship places.

Application procedure and choice of training

Young people looking for an apprenticeship submitted on average around 10 applications, one more than the previous year. The application procedure took longer in 2023 compared to the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among young people who have chosen general education, 74% attend a secondary school and 26% a general education school. The number of young people opting for an intermediate year before starting initial vocational training has increased compared to previous years.

Evolution of apprenticeship places allocated

The allocation rate for apprenticeship places in August 2023 (84%) is comparable to that of previous years. However, it should be noted that the places not allocated in 2023 were mainly due to the lack of applications, which represents a novelty compared to previous years.

Transitions barometer

The transitions barometer is a survey which reflects the situation at the end of compulsory education and is carried out twice a year, with reference days in April and August. The data comes from a written survey carried out among young people aged 14 to 17 and companies with at least two employees.
