Young kidney transplant patient is discharged from clinics and will be able to continue his university studies

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The 28-year-old patient was discharged 12 days after the kidney transplant surgery by cadaveric donation, at the Hospital de Clínicas, in order to continue the recovery process at home and the relevant medical check-ups. He said that when he overcomes this stage he will resume his law studies, because he wants to be a lawyer.

This is the 174th kidney transplant in adults since the reactivation of the Transplant Program of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UNA, and the fourth so far this year at the Hospital de Clínicas.

The young man said excitedly that when he received the news that he would have access to the long-awaited organ, it was one of the most special moments of his life that he will never forget, the best gift he has received so far, a new opportunity to live.

He thanked his mother for being with him at all times, the donor’s family and all the medical and nursing staff of the Transplant Department, who cared for him during his stay at the Hospital de Clínicas.

He also urged young people to become aware of organ donation in order to save and give life to more people like him, who need a transplant to continue living.

The recipient is a student from Horqueta, who has been receiving hemodialysis treatment for four years at the Hemodialysis Center of the Regional Hospital of Concepción.

The specialist from the Transplant Department of FCMUNA, Prof. Dr. Agustín Saldívar, expressed the importance of organ donation to save lives and improve quality of life.

He stressed that the news is very encouraging, especially for the kidney population in particular, because every time there is a transplant in any hospital in the country it is very important for these patients and even more so in cases of cadaveric donation.

He explained that while a living donor provides a single organ to a specific person, cadaveric donations provide several organs such as corneas, lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, part of the blood vessels, skin, pancreas, bones, and many people benefit from them.
