[메디컬투데이=조민규 기자] Research results have been published on risk factors that may affect the development of dementia in young people.
The results of a study on risk factors that affect the development of young dementia in people under 65 years of age were published in JAMA Neurology.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 10 adults over the age of 65 suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.
Dementia is a degenerative brain disease accompanied by cognitive decline and is known to have no cure yet. Scientists emphasize the development of drugs to slow the progression of dementia and reduce symptoms such as cognitive decline. It is also known that it is important to manage risk factors that affect the onset and detect them early.
The researchers analyzed risk factors for dementia in young people using data from the UK Biobank. Researchers collected and analyzed data from 356,000 participants under the age of 65 with no history of dementia.
During the follow-up period, 486 people developed dementia, and researchers identified 39 risk factors. After further analysis, the researchers identified 15 risk factors, including low level of education, alcoholism, social isolation, vitamin D deficiency, depression, stroke and diabetes.
Research results have shown that maintaining emotional and physical health is important in preventing dementia in young people, especially in middle age. The researchers emphasized that young dementia should be prevented by managing its risk factors.
