In Germany there are more and more cases of monkeypox. In 1970, these were first detected in a human in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). The first proven case was a nine-year-old boy.
After that, there were several cases in ten different countries on the continent. The reason for this is that the virus can be transmitted by different species of animals. Like the corona virus, the monkeypox virus is one of the zoonoses.
Symptoms of monkeypox
Monkeypox infection manifests itself through several symptoms. The typical skin changes, which show up as spots and blisters, form one to three days after infection. Other symptoms include headaches and body aches, coughing, fatigue and a sore throat.
Spontaneous fever of up to 40 degrees can also occur. The lymph nodes can swell and the affected person generally feels ill and very weak. In general, immediate action should be taken when the typical skin changes are visible. Going to the doctor is then essential.
The virus is so dangerous
Two variants of monkeypox are currently known. There is a variant with a milder course that shows fever and isolated smallpox on the skin and mucous membranes. On the other hand, there is a dangerous virus variant.
It shows serious diseases and can be compared to the human smallpox, which are considered to be eradicated. Vaccines and drugs are available for treatment, so it is now assumed that a severe pandemic should not occur.
