If you were a regular at the arcades in the 90s, then there’s a good chance that you’ve already come across a ninja game called Mystic Warriors. The latter is part of Konami’s golden age in the 90s, with arcade hits such as TMNT: Turtles in Time and the excellent Sunset Riders. It is also the team behind the cowboy game which was responsible for this Mystic Warriors, of which Turk 182 has excellent memories.
In the era of 4K, ray-tracing and 60 (or 120) fps, it is good to immerse ourselves in our video games of yesteryear, those that we still enjoy launching on NES today , on Master System, on Super Nintendo, PC Engine or even on a good old computer from the time. A little look into retro gaming, like a little video game journey into the distant past. A column hosted by Turk182, which we warmly invite you to discover on his excellent “Retroblog« .
Mystic Warriors, l’après Sunset Riders chez Konami
Hello old people! The year 1994 is a curious year and one that I will never forget. I will never forget it because it was the year I met my wife. How time flies… At that time, I was still just a young drummer full of dreams and who spent his weekends juggling between rehearsals and the Arcade room which was on the Cours Mirabeau d’ Aix en Provence.

Pierre, my pianist, and I often stopped in this games room to slip a few coins into the arcade machines which changed quite often. Sunset Riders was our favorite but one day it was replaced by another Konami classic: Mystic Warriors.

We were obviously disappointed but following inserting our respective 5 franc coins, our disappointment gave way to our amazement. Indeed the game seemed interesting and its heroes were magnificent. It promised to be heavy. We found our feet quite quickly having been addicted to Sunset Riders, made by the same authors, with the only difference that this time we were no longer in the Wild West but in a futuristic New York.
In Mystic Warriors you have the choice between 5 warriors Spyros, Keima, Kojiro, Brad, and Yuri who will each have a very personal way of fighting. There’s not much to explain regarding the game, we kill pretty much everything that crosses our path. The great strength of Mystic Warriors is the ease of gameplay. Shooting in all eight directions is enjoyable.

During your frantic race, several items will be offered to you by destroying the boxes your enemies are carrying. In these boxes you will often have the opportunity to encounter an artifact that increases the power of your weapon and also some instant power that will allow you to destroy everything on the screen.
The feeling that remains in my memories is the pleasure we felt playing it together, this easy handling and this increasing difficulty.

Obviously, bosses will be waiting for you at the end of each level. Levels which will all be very different and full of energy like the one which takes place in the snowy mountains where you will begin a crazy race on skis.
This is perhaps one of the shortest articles on my blog, but it is true that Mystic Warriors is a beat’em all like many others but with sublime graphics, nervous animation and very easy handling. easy things that I have been able to see. It has this je ne sais quoi that hooks you from the first parts.

In the end, we never regretted this change of terminal, but this pleasure was short-lived because in February I was going to meet the woman of my life and forget even for a while the arcade terminals to devote myself, in her company, to the creation of a rock group which will have great success in the south of France and even as far as Spain where she is from.
