Starting in June this year, if you order a drink in a disposable cup at a coffee shop or fast food restaurant, you will have to pay a deposit.

On the 18th, the Ministry of Environment announced the 2022 work plan of the Climate and Carbon Policy Office and the Resources Circulation Bureau including these details.

From June 10 of this year, the deposit system for disposable cups (plastic cups or paper cups) used for take-out sales at coffee shops and fast food restaurants will be implemented.

Consumers who purchase beverages such as coffee in disposable cups must pay an additional deposit in addition to the drink price. The deposit will be between 200 and 500 won per cup.

The collected disposable cups are sent to a specialized recycling company for recycling.

The disposable cup deposit system will be implemented for businesses with more than 100 stores that sell beverages such as coffee, and accordingly, the deposit system will be applied to 38,000 stores nationwide.
