Stoltenberg said that the military operation launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Ukraine has broken peace in Europe, noting that it has brought regarding a change not only for European security but for the world order.
Two main tasks
In his speech at the Davos Forum, Stoltenberg stressed that NATO has two main tasks in responding to Russian aggression: the first is to provide support to Ukraine, and the second is to prevent the escalation of this war.
He explained that NATO and its allies have worked over many years to support Ukraine, especially the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, by providing it with equipment and training thousands of Ukrainian soldiers, noting that since the start of the “Russian invasion”, this support has been intensified by providing billions of dollars, weapons and other assistance. To support Ukraine in exercising its right to self-defence enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
He pointed out that NATO’s primary responsibilities are to protect all allies and prevent the war from escalating; Which causes more destruction and more casualties.
He pointed out that everyone was surprised by the “brutal attack of Russia”, as he described it, adding: “But no one should be surprised because this invasion was one of the actions that was predicted before,” referring to the intelligence information shared by NATO members, which It was announced several months ago to warn of Putin’s plans.
