Many women suffer from menstrual pain but few really care regarding it. According to the results of a study – which will be presented at the annual meeting of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) – it would be possible to act on it by modifying your diet.
The researchers analyzed many studies on the subject, they found that diets high in meat, oil, sugar, salt and coffee caused inflammation and accentuate these pains. Conversely, diets high in omega-3 fatty acids and low in processed foods, oil and sugar reduce inflammation. In people who follow a vegan diet, inflammation levels are lower.
“Minimize pain”
In general, these studies have shown that diets high in omega-6 fatty acids promote inflammation and that foods high in omega-3 fatty acids reduce this phenomenon. In effect, the muscles of the uterus contract because of prostaglandins, active during inflammatory responses.
“Since period pain is one of the leading causes of school absenteeism among adolescent girls, it is important to explore options that can minimize pain. Something like changing the diet might be a relatively simple fix that might give them a little relief.”
