A proposal is emerging to use the temporary name of the ‘President’s Office’ as the name of the office of the President’s Office relocated to Yongsan, Seoul.
The Presidential Office Name Committee, which deliberates and selects a new name for the Presidential Office, held a meeting on the 14th and finally discussed the new name of the Office of the President.
The Presidential Office Name Committee was scheduled to decide on one of the five candidates for the new name of the presidential office that day (People’s House, Mineum Government Complex, Barunnuri 22, Itaewon-ro) by adding the results of the public preference survey and the judges’ points in a 7 to 3 ratio. .
The five nominations were selected from 30,000 entries received through a public open call for one month from April 15th. The public preference survey was conducted from the 3rd to the 9th. In the survey, it is known that the people’s government building and 22 Itaewon-ro had a high preference. The National Government Complex has the meaning of listening to the people (聽, hear them) and thinking of the people (思, people to think regarding). Itaewon-ro 22 was named following the street address of the office, and it received a good response from the 2030 generation.
As a result of an independent survey conducted by Gallup Korea, an opinion polling agency, on their preference for the new name of the presidential office among 1,000 adult men and women across the country from the 7th to the 9th, 36% of the respondents chose the National Government Complex. It was followed by People’s House (12%), Itaewon-ro 22 (10%), Barunnuri (8%), and Mineum Government Complex (7%).
However, as President Yoon Seok-yeol expressed negative views on the five nominations, opinions that a new name should be considered began to emerge. It is reported that President Yoon said at a luncheon with the People’s Power leadership on the 10th, “I do not like all the names that have been conspired.”
Inside the presidential office, there were concerns that the use of a new name for the People’s Government Complex or People’s House might spark a controversy over factionalism. This is because they share the word ‘people’ with the power of the people, the ruling party. It has been pointed out that Itaewon-ro 22 is inappropriate because it contains a specific place name. The opinion that the weight is lower than the existing ‘Blue House’ also gained strength. The possibility of using the presidential office as the official name and using one of the nominations as an alias is also being discussed.
An official from the presidential office met with reporters on the same day and explained regarding President Yoon’s remarks, “I think he said it in the sense of ‘Isn’t there something better?’ because his name is important.” He continued, “The president’s office would have reviewed what has been released so far and listened to public opinion and opinions of various experts,” he said.
