Woo made a phone call to Mayor Lee on the 22nd and expressed his feelings that the careful support of Yongin City and the passionate support of the citizens were a great help in reaching the goal of winning the international competition.
Mayor Lee Sang-il said, “I am very proud of winning the international competition during the two weeks of hard marching, including participating in Doha, Qatar, Yecheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Yokohama, Japan.” It gave me great hope,” he said.
He continued, “What is more important than good grades is to always work in a bright manner as always and maintain good condition without injury.”
Woo overcame Joel Baden of Australia over 2m29 at the ‘2023 Seiko Golden Grand Prix’ held in Yokohama, Japan on the 21st and won the first world gold medal this year.
The Seiko Golden Grand Prix is one of the ‘Continental Tour’, an international track and field event recognized by the World Association of Athletics Federations, and Woo Sang-hyeok is the first Korean player to win the Golden Grand Prix.

Woo said, “I always remember the ‘Yongin Special City’ engraved on my uniform after crossing the bar and the time to prepare at the starting line.” It was a great help in the process,” he said.
“It’s unfortunate that I couldn’t break the Korean record in the competition, but I will show good results in the remaining competitions by maintaining my current physical condition without getting injured, as Mayor Lee Sang-il asked me to do,” he added.
Woo previously won silver medals at the Asian Indoor Championships held in Kazakhstan in February and at the World Association of Athletics Federations Diamond League held in Doha, Qatar on the 6th.
He will move from Japan to Italy on the 30th to challenge for the championship of the World Athletics Federation Diamond League, which will be held in Rome, Italy on the 2nd of next month.
He will also participate in the World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary in August and the Asian Games in Hangzhou in September to take on a great challenge for a golden medal.
