The Bulgarian sailors captured on the Galaxy Leader ship in the Red Sea are finaly coming home. MEP Elena Yoncheva shared the joyous news, revealing the sailors were in good health despite enduring over a year of captivity by the Yemeni Houthis.
“Obviously they look good, but I think after 14 months in captivity they are exhausted and emaciated. However, they showed that they have a high spirit, that they are strong and brave Bulgarian men,” ” Yoncheva stated.
Lubomir Chanev and Danail Veselinov are the names of the two Bulgarian sailors who endured a harrowing ordeal. According to Yoncheva,who was in contact with them throughout their captivity,the men were initially held aboard the ship,later moved to ”somthing similar to hotel conditions,” and finally taken to the Yemeni capital Sana’a.
Yoncheva also revealed that international efforts were underway to secure their release, noting: “Many countries were negotiating for the Bulgarians to be included in the truce between Israel and Hamas.Last week I spoke with one of the main negotiators in Qatar.”
A goverment plane carrying a delegation led by Foreign Minister Georgi Georgiev departed yesterday for Muscat, Oman – a crucial step in bringing the sailors safely back to their loved ones.

How would you describe the sailors’ condition upon release,and what were the living conditions like during their captivity?
Well,they obviously looked good,given the circumstances,but they were understandably exhausted and emaciated after 14 months in captivity. Despite this, they showed immense strength and resilience – true Bulgarian spirit. Initially, they were held aboard the ship, but later moved to conditions similar to a hotel, and finally to the Yemeni capital, Sana’a.
International negotiations
Could you tell us more about the international efforts to secure their release and the involvement of other countries,such as Qatar?
Many countries were involved in negotiations,working to include the Bulgarians in the truce between Israel and Hamas. I spoke with one of the main negotiators in Qatar last week, and I believe their combined efforts were crucial in bringing these sailors home.
