ALTERNATIVA Film Project, a global non-profit film initiative founded by international technology company Indrive, launches the second edition of the Alternativa Film Awards and Festival. The event will be held in Yogyakarta.
In the second edition, the Alternativa Film Awards will present a more diverse series of programs than the debut edition. Starting from a film festival with screenings of nominated films and discussions on November 22-28, 2024. Then, there are also impact days with international programs in the form of workshops, exhibitions, and meetings for film professionals taking place on November 27-28, 2024, as well as an awards ceremony on November 29, 2024.
The debut edition of the Alternativa Film Award and Festival took place last year in Kazakhstan. The second edition is expected to expand the Indonesian and Southeast Asian markets. The film festival and awards also seek to recognize the achievements of filmmakers from the emerging film industry who are not yet widely known. In addition, it also aims to make them more visible on a global scale. The films that are appreciated include artistic aspects and social impact.
This year, the festival received 1043 works from 33 countries, which is more than double the number from last year. Of these, 680 submissions (208 feature films and 472 short films) were considered eligible. Films from Indonesia numbered 206, the most, followed by the Philippines (132), Malaysia (58), Vietnam (56), India (40) and Thailand (40).
“We are very pleased and honored to see a huge increase in the number of submissions in the second year of the award. This shows the tremendous interest in our projects from the film community, especially in Southeast Asia. This year we also added a film festival to the awards series to connect filmmakers and their impactful films with audiences and to start public discussions on issues that concern us all,” said Head of Alternativa Film Project Liza Surganova in a press release received by Media Indonesia, Wednesday, (11/9).
The Film Alternativa award selection committee, which this year consists of 24 film industry experts from around the world, will announce the list of nominees in mid-October 2024. Winners will be selected by an international jury consisting of directors and producers from Asia and other regions, as well as community leaders and NGO representatives. The total prize money for the awards is US$100,000, with US$20,000 for each of the four feature film categories, and US$10,000 for each of the two short film award winners.
“One of the uniqueness of Alternativa is its nomadic nature. So that each targeted area can maximize the social issues that it wants to convey, very relevant and representative,” concluded the member of the 2024 Alternativa Film Awards selection committee Lulu Ratna. (M-4)
