Yoga workshops are incorporated as treatment for people deprived of liberty

Asunción, IP Agency.- The Ministry of Justice incorporated yoga therapies in the “Casa del Buen Pastor” Women’s Penitentiary Center within its rehabilitation and social reintegration programs and projects.

The experience is developed by AUM Yoga Wellness Lab, with techniques focused on deep psychological factors and behavioral consequences as an alternative for the rehabilitation and transformation of women deprived of liberty.

Under the name of the “Inner Refuge” program, a calendar of yoga workshops was scheduled distributed over eight days with two hours of sessions, between October 14 and 29, an experience where instructors teach about techniques that combine relaxation, meditation, breathing. , postures and exercises inspired by Hatha yoga, Pranayama and Yin yoga.

The in-person classes are taught by Marcela Romero, an accredited yoga therapeutics instructor, who is accompanied by other experts. This activity can be used by many of the 538 women deprived of liberty (MPL) currently detained in the prison.

Alternative routes in the resocialization of people deprived of liberty are part of the system changes contemplated in the New Penitentiary Management Model. Yoga as a practice focused on mental and physical self-control is now implemented in penitentiaries, as a psycho-social care reintegration program.
