Yoan Wessa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo player, confirmed that he is proud to be Congolese and to answer the call of the nation without hesitation, saying, “We seek to carry our country’s flag to the highest levels in the 2023 African Nations Championship currently being held in Côte d’Ivoire.”

Yoan Wesa said in statements reported by the official CAF website, “I am where they need me, in attack, in midfield, and in defense. When my country calls me, I must be present. I am very proud to be Congolese.”

Yoan Wisa added, “This is the kind of responsibility that I like to bear, like the rest of our team. We are men and we want to carry the country’s flag to the highest levels.”

The Congolese player responded to a question regarding the identity of the Leopards’ next opponent in the semi-finals: “Whether it is Mali or Côte d’Ivoire, we have no preference. They are two great football countries, we must be armed to face them.”

The Democratic Republic of Congo qualified for the semi-finals of the 2023 African Cup of Nations following defeating its Guinean counterpart, 3-1, in the match that brought them together at Alassane Ouattara Stadium, as part of the quarter-finals of the tournament currently being held in Côte d’Ivoire.

The goals of the match for the Democratic Republic of Congo were scored by Chancel Mbemba in the 27th minute, Yoan Wessa in the 65th minute, and Arthur Masuaku in the 82nd minute, while the only goal for Guinea came from Mohamed Bayo in the 21st minute from the penalty spot.

The Democratic Republic of Congo will play with the winner of the match between host Côte d’Ivoire and Mali on February 7 at Alassane Ouattara Stadium.
