Actress Ana María Orozco will once once more star in the story as Betty.

“Yo soy Betty, la fea”, one of the most popular Colombian telenovelas in the history of television, will be broadcast once more next year with a new story.

Ana María Orozco and Jorge Enrique Abello, the protagonists of the original telenovela, will reprise Betty and Armando in the new version, 20 years following their marriage began on the telenovela.

Amazon Prime Video announced that the series will premiere on its direct streaming service in more than 240 countries and territories around the world, in co-production with Estudios RCN de Colombia.

“This bet is the evolution of the most successful telenovela in Latin America for distribution and a digital market,” Alexander Marín, RCN’s distribution vice president, said in a statement.

The original “I am Betty, the ugly” is considered by Guinness World Records as the most successful soap opera in history.

Not only was it broadcast in hundreds of countries and dubbed into 15 languages, but it was adapted in various territories including the United States, India, and South Africa.

Beatriz Pinzón Solano was a brilliant economist, with a master’s degree in finance, who had a single “defect”: she was ugly.

When she starts working at the Ecomoda company as an assistant to executive Armando Mendoza, she not only falls in love with him, but tries to become a successful and desired woman to win his love.

That was the plot of the soap opera that premiered in 1999.

The news of Betty’s return was received with great interest.

This time, Betty will be an empowered woman and leader of a company, but with new family challenges.

Betty is still married to Armando, but she will have to make an effort to rebuild her relationship with Mila, their teenage daughter.

At the same time, she will try to cope with the crisis that the family company is going through while questioning whether the decision she made two decades ago really makes her happy.

“’Yo soy Betty, la fea’ had a wholesome energy, with a huge impact that this character had on conventional beauty codes, which explains why it became a global franchise that all women might relate to,” said Francisco Morales, who leads Prime Video’s content and acquisitions strategy for Latin America, in a statement.

Mauricio Cruz Fortunato, whose work includes “Café con Aroma de Mujer, 2020”, directs the new series and the story was in charge of the scriptwriters Marta Betoldi, Juan Carlos Pérez and César Betancur.
