Ynet: The moment of truth is approaching and Netanyahu is ready for the government to fall after the deal

In an article written by Nadav El, Ynet noted that “we are at a crossroads. A simple incident will suffice and the deterioration into a regional war will be rapid. This is precisely why the United States and mediators are trying so hard to change the overall picture.”

He added: “The summit that will be held in four days (August 15) is seen as the absolute last chance to reach a ceasefire, not only in Gaza, but in the Middle East as well.”

“US officials will be flowing into the region next week and will try to iron out all the details before the meeting. Any gap that the two sides do not bridge by Thursday will be closed by a joint proposal from the mediators and the US. In other words, the White House will put a final mediation proposal on the table, trying to fully commit the parties to the broad outlines,” he continued.

The author of the article pointed out that the mediators are tired, especially of Netanyahu. They understand his political limits well, but their feeling (Qatar, Egypt and the United States) is that the prime minister is playing with them, he is not serious and does not want to reach an agreement, he is deliberately delaying the answers, and that most of the security services are convinced that Netanyahu has made a decision against it, and that he has become addicted to the idea that the war cannot end before the death of the leader of the factions movement.

He added: “As for Netanyahu, if he does not act now, the majority of the security establishment is convinced that he is delaying and frustrating the idea that the war cannot end, at the cost of the lives of the hostages.”

Two senior coalition members close to the prime minister said Netanyahu knows the government will fall under the deal, and has decided he is ready for it, Ynet reported. He will also reap political rewards: The deal will return some of the kidnapped soldiers, but it will leave the possibility of renewed war.

He noted that if an agreement is reached, ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich — who received rare, direct condemnation from the White House this weekend, perhaps as a prelude to sanctions — would not necessarily resign. The government would be bankrupt anyway.

The website concluded, “This is the moment of truth for Netanyahu, as there will be a deal on the table this week, and both sides will have to say yes or no.”
