Pitcher Yilber Díaz had a great debut in Major League Baseball with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday and also became the 482nd Venezuelan to see action in the Majors.
Díaz, who in Venezuela belongs to Caribes de Anzoátegui, started the game that his team ultimately lost to the Atlanta Braves with a score of 5-4 in extra innings.
The right-hander, a native of Miranda state, pitched six innings in which he allowed four hits, one run (a home run), gave up one walk and struck out five opponents. Despite his great start, he ultimately left without a decision.
Yilber Díaz’s debut in the Big Show caused a stir on social media, especially because of his history prior to signing with the Arizona organization. According to journalist Enis Espinoza, the 23-year-old player had migrated to Peru at the age of 18 and sold ice cream there to support himself.
His departure to Inca soil occurred following failing to attract the attention of any Major League team at the average age, which is between 16 and 17 years old. While in Peru, someone saw him pitching and recommended that he return to Venezuela and try baseball once more, and this time he did succeed, now at 20 years old.
After just over two seasons in the minor leagues, the native of Guatire finally made his debut in the Big Top and his performance seems to have enough merit to stay.
