“I am happy and excited that the DIPETHE of Patras chose me. Patras has a rich history, not only its DIPETHE, but also the city itself. Great cultural and sporting history”. These were the first words of Yannis Kalatzopoulos when we contacted him. The new artistic director of the Municipal Regional Theater of Patras, has a long history in the theater as well as in the cinema, while he became known as a “prodigy child”.

Speaking to pelop.gr, said that the burden is great as is his enthusiasm, adding characteristically: “I may have several years in the theater, but that does not mean that I will bend under the weight of responsibilities. I know things are hard. We live in an anti-spiritual age. DIPETHE as a whole, and by extension DIPETHE Patras, have a difficult but beautiful role to play: to keep people’s minds and souls open. I will also contribute to this.”
Referring to the cultural scene as it has been shaped today, Yiannis Kalatzopoulos pointed out: “A scene has been formed in the cultural affairs of the country as if there is a “Chinese wall” between the heavy culture for the few and the shoddy theater for the rest of the world. For the rest of the world, there are unfortunately only the serials, the stadium and the bouzoukis. I have nothing once morest bouzoukis, but they also need the spiritual nourishment that the majority of the audience lacks. I hope for the support of both the public of the city and its artistic forces with whom I hope to collaborate”.
THE FIRST MOVEMENTS
Yiannis Kalatzopoulos’s statement regarding the hope for cooperation with the artistic forces of the city, which he said is his priority to get to know, gave us an opportunity to ask him regarding his first moves. And of course we mightn’t leave out the children’s theater from which it actually originates. “We will put a burden there” he characteristically answers and continues: “Children are tomorrow’s theatergoers and my own participation and contribution has always moved in this direction: to not just offer one or two pleasant hours, but to cultivate and nurture them prepare for life”.
In fact, as he always notes, he has Manolis Anagnostakis’ verse in mind: “We must tell the truth to the children” and he goes with it: “In a pleasant way we should talk to the children regarding reality and not just regarding princes and fairies. After all, a lot depends on the cultivation of the children’s audience for the future of the theater,” he adds.
The second area to which Yiannis Kalatzopoulos will give special importance is to “open” DIPETHE to as large a part of the Greek public as possible. “I want to get those who don’t go to the theater off the couch. The common public. Theater lovers will also have their own performances, but the weight will be given to the general public” concludes the new artistic director of DIPETHE Paras.
