Yeusvi Flores: Save the lives of women

Dear women, today I want to talk to you regarding a crucial issue for our health: breast cancer prevention. Especially since in recent days the unfortunate death of the Mexican television presenter, actress and comedian Verónica Toussaint, who suffered from this deadly disease, has been in the headlines. This type of cancer is the most common among women worldwide and represents one of the main causes of female mortality. It is essential that we all be informed and take proactive measures to protect ourselves.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed worldwide in 2020, representing 11.7% of all cancer cases.

In our country, the incidence of breast cancer has increased considerably in the last decade, being the most diagnosed type of cancer among women. Globally, breast cancer caused 685,000 deaths in 2020.

Although the mortality rate has decreased in many developed countries thanks to early detection and advanced treatments, it remains a significant threat to the lives of many women, especially in regions with limited access to health services.

The five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 90% in high-income countries, but can be significantly lower in low- and middle-income countries due to lack of access to early diagnosis and effective treatments.

Taking simple actions can make a big difference:

1.— Breast self-examination: It is crucial for all women, starting at age 20, to perform a monthly breast self-examination. This habit allows you to become familiar with the normal texture and shape of the breasts, making it easier to detect any abnormalities.

2.— Mammograms: Mammograms are an essential tool for early detection of breast cancer. It is recommended that women over the age of 40 have an annual mammogram. Those with a family history of breast cancer or additional risk factors should consult their doctor regarding the possibility of starting mammograms earlier and having them performed more frequently.

3.— Healthy lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking are important factors that can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.

4.— Physical activity: Regular physical activity, at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week, has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

5.— Medical history and tests: It is vital to share your complete medical history with your doctor and have regular check-ups. Women at high risk due to family history or genetic mutations (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2) may need additional tests and specific preventive measures.

Prevention and early detection of breast cancer are essential to reducing the incidence and mortality of this disease. I urge all of you to be proactive regarding your health, perform regular breast self-examinations, get mammograms when appropriate, and adopt a healthy lifestyle. Together, we can reduce the impact of breast cancer and promote healthier, longer lives.

Remember, early detection saves lives.
