The Senate voted with 110 votes in favor, 25 once morest and 39 abstentions the majority resolution presented following the communications of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in view of the European Council of 21 and 22 March which will deal with the war in Ukraine, security and common defence, Gaza, EU enlargement, external relations, migration, agriculture and the European Semester.

The joint invitation from FdI, Fi and Lega

In the text of the parties that support the Meloni executive, among the 19 points we read the invitation to the Italian government to «continue to ensure strong support for Ukraine in the various dimensions, political-diplomatic, economic-financial, military and humanitarian for as long as necessary.” Furthermore, reference will be made to a «preparation activity for the Conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine which Italy should host in 2025». On the topic of the conflict in Gaza, FdI, Fi and Lega ask, among other things, for humanitarian interventions in Gaza, to pursue the perspective of “two peoples, two States” and also to counteract rampant anti-Semitism. On the point of migrants, however, we recall the importance of international agreements and the implementation of the Mattei plan. The other five resolutions, presented by the Pd, the M5S, Avs, Iv and Azione, were voted on separately in the Chamber. Resolutions on which the government had asked for some parts to be reformulated to give the green light.

«No to direct intervention, risk of escalation»

«I wanted to reaffirm support for Ukraine by convening the G7 from Kiev, on the anniversary of Russian aggression and heroic Ukrainian resistance». Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this in her communications in the Senate in view of the European Council on 21 and 22 March which will discuss the war in Ukraine, common security and defence, Gaza, EU enlargement, external relations, migration, agriculture and the semester European. «We are approaching one of the last European Councils of this legislature and once the obstacle of the revision of the pact has been overcome, a very significant part will focus on the major issues of international politics and will start from the topic» of the Russian invasion. On the proposal put forward by France regarding the possible direct intervention, “I also reiterate in this House that our position is not in favor of this hypothesis which heralds a dangerous escalation to be avoided at all costs”, added the Prime Minister, who hoped for the position of the government the compactness of Parliament.

«Navalny’s sacrifice will not be forgotten»

And once more: «Italy welcomes the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO and condemns any aggressive attitude by Russia towards these friendly countries as well as towards the Baltic countries. We reiterate our condemnation of farce elections in the Ukrainian territories and the death of Nalvalny, his name as a symbol of sacrifice for freedom will not be forgotten.”

“How can we sit down and deal with Russia?”

“How can you sit at the negotiating table with someone who has never respected the agreements?”. added Meloni when speaking regarding Russia’s violations of agreements with Ukraine. On cooperation with Kiev he added: «It is not a commitment to supply weapons, but an agreement that concerns 360 degree cooperation, as is natural to happen with a state that has started the process of joining the European Union ».
