Yemen: Two women and a child killed, 26 others missing after water barrier collapses

A local authority source told Sputnik that heavy rains fell on Al Mahwit Governorate, resulting in floods that caused a water barrier to collapse in Malhan District, west of the governorate, which led to the partial and complete destruction of six houses, and the death of two women and a child who were pulled out from under the rubble of their house by rescue teams. The search is still ongoing for six people from the same family, while residents were able to rescue an entire family after their house collapsed.

He added that the water flowing from the collapse of the dam, which is located on top of a mountain, swept away agricultural lands, shops and a number of cars, and caused material losses.

He stated that the heavy rains and floods in the Malhan Directorate also led to a rock collapse in the “Al-Qibla” district in the same directorate, which resulted in the destruction of a mosque and a neighboring house, inhabited by about 20 people. Rescue efforts are still ongoing to extract them from under the rubble despite the continued rainfall and flooding.

Last Friday, a family of six died in the same Al Mahwit Governorate, as a result of their house collapsing due to heavy rains that have been hitting Yemen since the beginning of August.

Last Wednesday, Ansar Allah (Houthis) announced the death of 86 people and the damage of 33,123 families, as a result of heavy rains and torrential floods that hit the governorates of Hodeidah and Raymah in western Yemen and Hajjah in the northwest of the country.

Last Monday, the United Nations announced that 38,285 families (nearly 268,000 people) were affected by heavy rains and floods that hit Yemen since the beginning of this month.

Heavy rains and floods in Yemen were concentrated in the governorates of Marib, Hodeidah, Hadhramaut, Taiz, Saada and Hajjah, resulting in the death and injury of 211 people, the destruction of hundreds of homes, the damage of thousands of families and extensive material losses, according to sources for Sputnik.

According to the United Nations, heavy rains and floods are exacerbating the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Yemen caused by the power struggle between the internationally recognized government and the Houthi group, which is entering its tenth year.
