Created in 2014, Yellow May is an international movement that aims to raise awareness regarding the high number of traffic accidents that occur around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1.35 million people die each year due to traffic accidents in 178 countries.
The Brazilian campaign, conceived by the National Road Safety Observatory, is in its 10th edition and promotes coordinated action between different public and private sectors, seeking to mobilize society as a whole by putting the need to make traffic safer for everyone on the agenda.
The month of May was chosen because of a UN (United Nations) resolution of May 11, 2011, which decreed the Decade of Action for Traffic Safety, a commitment made by governments around the world to take new measures to prevent traffic accidents. This milestone turned this month into a world reference for road safety mobilizations.
Yellow May promotes educational actions and events to raise awareness of the importance of respecting laws and traffic signs, and to encourage the adoption of behaviors and attitudes that contribute to greater safety in traffic and, consequently, to the reduction of accidents and deaths. This year’s theme is “In traffic, choose life”.
For Lucas Nogueira, Key Account Manager at Advantech Brasil, a leading company in intelligent IoT (internet of things) solutions and embedded platforms, it is necessary that awareness campaigns such as Maio Amarelo take advantage of digital media and social networks to disseminate relevant information on road safety. “Educational videos, informational posts and interactive campaigns can help reach a wider audience and engage them more effectively,” he points out.
Nogueira also points out that the development of mobile applications dedicated to road safety can be an effective way of providing guidance, tips and reminders to drivers. “These types of apps might include diverse features such as information regarding traffic conditions, traffic laws, vehicle checks, etc.”
Still according to the specialist, the campaigns might use virtual and augmented reality technology to offer drivers immersive experiences with simulations of challenging traffic situations, which would contribute to the education of users and to their awareness of the risks linked to traffic, many of them originated from the behavior of the driver of the vehicle.
Still according to Nogueira, nowadays we have intelligent technologies available that can help drivers make decisions to reduce accidents on the roads, among them, speed cameras, automatic braking systems, intelligent driver fatigue cameras, intelligent cameras for lane analysis and distance from the vehicle in front, collision alerts, blind spot sensors and camera, reversing cameras, GPS that shares real-time information regarding accidents, traffic conditions, signaling and the digitization of this entire system.
“However, the use of these technological resources must always be combined with continuous efforts in education, inspection, infrastructure improvement and cultural changes to transform traffic into a safer environment, thus obtaining significant results in the reduction of accidents”, concludes Lucas Walnut.
