A yellow level heavy rain warning has been issued for this followingnoon, for the entire central part of the country: the province of Hainaut, Brussels, Antwerp, Limburg, Walloon Brabant and Flemish Brabant are concerned.
The bulk of the rain will fall this followingnoon, with a few more small drops in the early evening. It should fall between 24 and 40L/M²: “It’s a lot”underlines Vanessa Matagne, weather presenter for RTL info. “That’s what usually falls in two weeks of a typical May month.”
This might create flooding as has already happened this morning. Beware of tunnels in Brussels and mudslides, even if there is no pre-flood warning. Better to stay vigilant.
The bulk of the stormy showers will be for this followingnoon but there will also be some, less intense in the early evening. Tomorrow, the rain should continue to fall less heavily, but be brave: this weekend, it will be drier and the temperatures will be milder.
Reality meteorology
We are actually stuck in a low pressure episode; active areas move very little just above our heads. “As long as the anticyclone remains stuck above the Atlantic, we will not have sunny and dry weather for a long period”explains Sébastien Doutreloup, climatologist at the University of Liège.
The positive point: the annual rainfall is average. “We are neither above nor below so we have a false feeling at the moment that we have a lot of precipitation probably because we have a lot of clouds”, continues Sébastien Doutreloup.
In summary: clouds, sunny spells and rain are on the program for quite some time. It remains to hope for the most favorable distribution possible…
