Yellow Fever Outbreak in Brazil: State of Roraima Records First Case in 16 Years

On August 27, the patient, a 38-year-old federal police officer, began showing symptoms: fever, intense vomiting and severe body pain. A day later he sought treatment in a private health unit and on the 29th he went to the Roraima General Hospital, where he was admitted due to the seriousness of the case. He died two days later. It was not until October 30 that the State Secretariat of Health (SE-SAU) received a report confirming that the cause of death was yellow fever. This is the first case of yellow fever recorded in the state in 16 years. The test confirming yellow fever was carried out at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases “Dr Evandro Serafim Lobo Chagas”, in Belém, Pará state.

SESAU has issued an alert in the 15 municipalities of the state on the need to vaccinate the population once morest the disease. In 2023, only 31.74% of Roraima residents were vaccinated once morest yellow fever.
