Yellen’s First High-level Economic Talks in China and Updates on Investment Curbs

US Treasury Secretary Yellen plans to visit Beijing in early July for her first high-level economic talks with China’s new economic ministers. This was confirmed by several people familiar with his plans.

Yellen’s long-anticipated visit to China was postponed until “an appropriate time,” she said in April. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the visit have not been officially announced.

The Biden administration is also nearing completion of an executive order that would regulate and potentially block certain U.S. investments in China, and aims to have it ready for publication as early as the end of July, internal deliberations have said. A person familiar with the matter said.

Yellen is the second member of a Biden administration to visit China following relations between the world’s two largest economies soured earlier this year. Secretary of State Brinken, who visited China earlier, held talks with Chinese foreign ministers and briefly met with President Xi Jinping.

U.S. and Chinese officials said Brinken’s visit was productive, with both sides discussing a range of issues frankly.

A senior administration official said Wednesday that Yellen’s visit to China was pending, and that the executive order had not been finalized and had not been set when it would be issued.

In China, in March, Xi’s longtime confidant He Lifeng was appointed vice premier in charge of China’s economic policy, replacing Liu He. The post has long been considered equivalent to the U.S. Treasury Secretary.
