Yellen sees progress between the US and China

According to the US Treasury Secretary, China and the US have made progress and might have a healthy relationship. “No single visit will solve our challenges overnight. But I hope this trip will build a solid and productive channel of communication with China’s new economic team,” Janet Yellen said Sunday morning in China before her departure.

Ten-hour bilateral meetings with senior Chinese officials over the past few days have been “direct, substantive and productive,” she added.

More communication can help both sides better understand the global economic outlook and make better decisions to strengthen each other’s economies, Yellen said earlier. She reiterated that the US would not seek economic advantage or outright dominance in relations with China. Rather, it is regarding healthy competition with fair rules, from which both countries benefit.

However, the US would continue to directly communicate concerns regarding certain economic practices and take targeted action to protect its national security. “President (Joe) Biden and I do not view the US-China relationship in the context of a great power conflict. We believe the world is big enough for both of our countries to thrive in,” Yellen said.
