Assistant to Carl Hoefkens at Standard, Yaya Touré is leaving the Liège club to become the assistant to Italian Roberto Mancini on the bench of the Saudi Arabian national team, Standard reported on Friday.
Touré, 40, arrived at Standard last June to become Carl Hoefkens’ assistant on the ‘Rouches’ bench. A few months following his arrival, the former Ivory Coast international, notably with Barcelona and Manchester City, left the banks of the Meuse to become the deputy of Roberto Mancini, new coach of Saudi Arabia.
Yaya Touré pays tribute to Standard following his departure: “A special bond with this club”
In the Middle East, Touré, who also wore the Beveren jersey between 2001 and 2004, will reunite with Mancini who had been his coach at Manchester City between 2010 and 2013. “Standard de Liège thanks Yaya for his contribution during these last months and wishes him the best for the rest of his professional career,” wrote the Standard in its press release.
Yaya Touré had a great international career, starting at Beveren before joining bigger teams like AS Monaco, FC Barcelona and Manchester City. He has 626 matches and 103 goals in his club career and has won several major trophies such as the Champions League, La Liga, Premier League and Club World Cup.
